    U.S. Marines Retake Ship From Pirates

    U.S. Marines took control of a German-owned M/V Magellan Star Sept. 9 after it had been captured by pirates amid the recent surge in piracy along the east coast of Africa.

    Sept. 9: In this photo released by the U.S. Navy, the USS Dubuque is seen after U.S. Marines from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit's Maritime Raid Force retook control of the M/V Magellan Star. A Turkish warship was the first on the scene, responding to a distress call from Magellan Star. Two additional U.S. warships, the USS Dubuque and USS Princeton arrived in the vicinity of the attack to provide support to the Turkish ship.

    Sept. 9: The M/V Magellan Star had been attacked and captured by pirates on Wednesday. A Turkish warship was the first on the scene, responding to a distress call from Magellan Star. The USS Dubuque and USS Princeton arrived in the vicinity of the attack to provide support to the Turkish ship.

    Sept. 9: Helicopters from the USS Dubuque, right, provide aerial watch as U.S. Marines from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit's Maritime Raid Force, board and take control of German-owned vessel M/V Magellan Star, left. It reportedly took the Marines an hour to subdue the pirates and retake the ship. No shots were reported fired as Marines overtook the pirates, and no injuries or casualties were reported.

    Sept. 9: It wasn't immediately clear where the U.S. took the ship. The successful mission by Combined Maritime Forces secured the safety of the ship's crew and returned control of the Magellan Star to the civilian mariners while the 9 pirates remain on the ship awaiting transfer.
