Top US negotiator on Iran to visit Israel

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

The U.S. State Department says the top American negotiator in Iran nuclear talks is visiting Israel to consult on regional issues.

Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman will be in Tel Aviv Friday "to reaffirm our unshakeable commitment to Israel's security," according to a department statement.

Iran and six world powers, including the U.S., met in Baghdad this week to discuss halting Iran's nuclear program.

The U.S. has gradually tempered its demands for an immediate and complete halt to Iran's ability to make nuclear fuel, which the West and allies fear could provide the foundations of warhead-grade material. Iran denies it seeks atomic arms.

Israel has criticized the talks as an Iranian stalling tactic.
