Swiss police say they've identified the remains of two Japanese climbers who went missing 45 years ago, several months after their bones were found on a glacier under the Matterhorn mountain.
Valais canton (state) police said Thursday that a climber found the remains in September. They were taken for forensic examination, and experts put together DNA profiles.
Regional police keep a list of people who've been reported missing since 1925, and they say the Japanese consulate in Geneva helped them find relatives. They confirmed the men's identity by comparing DNA.
Police didn't release the names of the Japanese climbers, who had been missing since Aug. 18, 1970. One was identified in June and the other a month later. They said long-missing remains sometimes surface as a result of receding glaciers.
