Strong quake felt in southern Peru

Published December 02, 2016

Associated Press

A strong, shallow earthquake has hit in a sparsely populated area in southern Peru near Lake Titicaca in the Andes, but local media say there are no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.3, while Peru's geological institute measured the tremor at 5.5.

The USGS says the quake's epicenter was about 26 miles (43 kilometers) north-northeast of Huarichancara in Peru's Puno region. It occurred 1.8 miles (3 kilometers) deep.

Local radio said shaking was felt in the city of Juliaca and other towns in the region.
