Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is trumpeting news of a big drop in the number of unemployed citizens as a reason for voters to support his party in general elections he must call by the end of the year.
The number of registered unemployed dropped by nearly 118,000 from April to May, leaving 4.2 million jobless.
Lower-level Spanish officials usually comment on the report listing how many Spaniards are registered as unemployed with the government.
But Rajoy did it Tuesday to pitch his Popular Party as the political force that should run Spain for the next four years.
His party came in first in regional elections held May 24 but lost significant levels of support as two upstart parties won votes.
The country's overall unemployment rate is nearly 24 percent.
