Schools and universities across Lebanon are shut as the country mourns the victims of twin suicide bombings that struck a crowded neighborhood south of the capital.
The bombings Thursday killed at least 43 people and wounded more than 200 others. It was one of the bloodiest attacks in recent years, and shattered a relative calm that has held despite the civil war raging next door in Syria.
The attack in the predominantly Shiite neighborhood of Burj al-Barajneh was claimed by the extremist Islamic State group. The heavily populated district is part of the southern suburb of Beirut known as Dahyeh were the militant Hezbollah group holds sway.
Prime Minister Tammam Salam on Friday chaired a security meeting to discuss the bombings. Forensic experts are examining the scene of the blasts.
