Mexican officials say a mayoral candidate running on the governing party's ticket in a city near the U.S. border has escaped an attack by armed men who also briefly kidnapped his aide to obtain information.

A National Action Party state leader in Nuevo Leon says candidate Eduardo Campos Espinoza fled through the back door of his house when he saw the gunmen approaching. Campos is the PAN's candidate for the mayor's office in Anahuac.

PAN state committee chief Sandra Pamanes says the gunmen set fire to Campos' house but the damage was relatively minor. The attack happened Friday night but was only confirmed Monday after rumors about the incident spread online.

PAN officials have expressed concerns about organized crime groups interfering in elections.
