Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta, who has been indicted in a corruption probe, says he would consider resigning if the president guaranteed his successor was from the ruling coalition.
But Ponta also says he would prefer to remain in office.
Ponta said in an interview with B1 TV late Wednesday he would consider resigning if President Klaus Iohannis, a political rival, would formally agree to choose a candidate from the center-left coalition.
Prosecutors indicted Ponta on Monday on charges including tax evasion, money laundering, conflict of interest and making false statements while he was working as a lawyer in 2007 and 2008. Ponta, who was a legislator at the time, denies the allegations.
Ponta's assets have been temporarily frozen. He is Romania's first sitting prime minister to be indicted.
