One of the Vatican's biggest scandals in decades appears to be widening with reports that an Italian cardinal may be involved in a power struggle involving leaked documents, corruption and intrigue.
Leading newspapers Corriere della Sera and Il Messaggero said Monday that the pope's butler who was arrested three days ago for allegedly feeding documents to Italian journalists clearly did not act alone and that an unidentified cardinal is suspected of playing a major role in the scandal. The Vatican had no immediate comment.
The Vatican's investigation into the source of leaked documents yielded its first target with the arrest of the pope's butler, who reportedly kept a treasure trove of documents in his Vatican apartment.
The detention of butler Paolo Gabriele, part of Pope Benedict XVI's household staff, threw the Holy See into chaos.
