Preliminary autopsy of Burkina Faso leader killed decades ago says he was shot about 10 times

A lawyer says a preliminary autopsy says a revolutionary leader killed in Burkina Faso nearly three decades ago was shot about ten times in the chest, legs and head.

Thomas Sankara, a Marxist revolutionary, was killed in 1987 during a coup staged by his once-best friend Blaise Compaore in this West African nation.

A lawyer for Sankara's family said Tuesday he had received ballistic and autopsy reports and that eight members of the former presidential guard have been indicted. Stanislas Benewinde Sankara said the family now awaits DNA tests.

Compaore was forced from power late last year. Sankara's remains were exhumed in May upon his family's demands. Many in Burkina Faso want to know how Sankara was killed and if the remains in the grave are truly his.
