Media reports and witnesses say Bangladeshi police have charged with batons to disperse hundreds of opposition activists protesting in the capital. It is not clear whether there were any injuries in the clashes Saturday.
The demostrators are opposing a government bid to evict opposition leader Khaleda Zia from the military-owned home she has lived in for nearly 30 years.
ATN News and Channel I report that police with batons charged activists from Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party outside army headquarters in Dhaka after the protesters tried to enter the restricted military compound.
Zia, a former prime minister, has been living in a house inside the compound since 1981 when her husband, former President Ziaur Rahman, was assassinated in a military coup.
