The daughter of slain Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov has received Poland's democracy award in recognition of her father's and her own activity.

Poland's President Bronislaw Komorowski and former president, Lech Walesa, on Tuesday handed the 4 million zlotys ($1 million) solidarity award to Zhanna Nemtsova.

Nemtsova recently left Russia saying she had received threats after pressing for further investigations into her father's murder. She currently works for the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle.

Komorowski said the award was also for all those in Russia who believe that a "better, bigger, more beautiful Russia does not mean a Russia that everyone is afraid of."

Boris Nemtsov, a popular opposition leader and a critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, was assassinated Feb. 27, 2015, near the Kremlin.
