Pakistani officials say the prime minister has chosen the brother of a dead war hero to be the next army chief.
They say Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif chose Gen. Raheel Sharif Wednesday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to journalists.
The new chief, who is not related to the prime minister, will succeed Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, who led the force for six years. His brother was one of the army's most decorated soldiers and was killed in the 1971 war with India.
Retired officers say the new chief is expected to continue his predecessor's policies, including avoiding overt interference in politics.
That's important for the prime minister, who was toppled in a coup in 1999 by the last army chief he selected.
