India's troops fired mortars and used small arms to target civilians in border towns in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir on Thursday, killing a villager, Pakistan's military and foreign ministry said.
Another four civilians were wounded in the shelling, which the Pakistani military said was in violation of a cease-fire agreement. Pakistani troops returned fire, it said.
There was no immediate comment from India.
Pakistan's foreign office summoned the Indian Deputy High Commissioner Mr. J.P. Singh and condemned the violations. The deliberate targeting of civilians is contrary to human dignity and international human rights laws, the office said in a statement.
Kashmir is split between India and Pakistan and is claimed by both in its entirety. The nuclear-armed rivals have fought two of their three wars over Kashmir.
India accuses Pakistan of backing insurgents who have been fighting for Kashmir's independence or its merger with Pakistan, a charge Islamabad denies.
More than 68,000 people have been killed in Kashmir violence since 1989.
