Pakistani authorities briefly detained an American man at an airport in the country's east on Thursday for carrying 30 rounds of ammunition in his luggage, officials said.

Airport officials in the city of Lahore detained the man upon discovering the rounds in his bags. They then turned him over to police.

Police officer Suhail Kazmi said the man told authorities that he and his wife were on their way to the United States. He said the man was a retired teacher at a missionary school in Lahore.

The man told investigators that he had purchased the ammunition for hunting, and that he did not realize he was violating the law by traveling with the rounds, Kazmi said.

The man was later released after posting bail, but he cannot leave Pakistan until a court rules on his case, Kazmi said. It was not immediately clear how much bail was involved.

The U.S. Embassy said Thursday that it was looking into the case.
