Ousted ex-president says he'll return to Honduras

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

The former Honduran president who was ousted in a 2009 coup and later replaced by an elected successor has vowed to return to his country in 2011.

Ex-president Manuel Zelaya has said before he wants arrest warrants against him dropped before he returns.

Zelaya faces charges of fraud, usurping powers and falsifying documents, which he calls politically motivated.

But he did not mention those demands in a statement issued Friday from the Dominican Republic, where he has lived since January 2010.

Current President Porfirio Lobo is exploring ways Zelaya can face charges without being taken into custody.

Zelaya was forced into exile in June 2009 after ignoring court orders to drop a referendum on changing the constitution.
