A police officer says an opposition party in Pakistan is blocking roads in a major city to protest against the government.

Police officer Ahmad Bilal says the party of politician Imran Khan, a former cricket player, also began burning tires Monday in Pakistan's eastern city of Faisalabad, a major economic hub. Bilal says there were some clashes between Khan's supporters and security forces.

Khan has promised the strike is the first of a series to target major cities in the country after leading a monthslong demonstration in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, that shut down the city and sparked clashes.

Khan's Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf, or Justice Party, has demanded Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's resignation over their accusation of fraud in the May 2013 election that brought him to power.
