Opposition parties have filed a no-confidence motion against the pro-European government following the arrest of a former prime minister charged with involvement in massive bank fraud.
Lawmakers from the Communist Party and the Socialists' Party filed the motion Thursday, a week after Vlad Filat — premier from 2009 to 2013 — was arrested on charges of taking bribes of $260 million. It was part of a bank fraud in which up to $1.5 billion went missing from three banks ahead of 2014 elections.
The parties claim Prime Minister Valeriu Strelet was involved in the corruption. Pro-Russia opposition parties have 44 seats, short of the 51 votes they need to dismiss the government — but ties in the ruling coalition have been strained, giving the motion a chance of passing.
