MEXICO CITY – Mexican federal prosecutors are seeking to freeze all bank accounts linked to a former governor accused of accepting millions of dollars in bribes from drug cartels.
An official with the Attorney General's Office says the request submitted to the National Banking and Securities Commission is part of an investigation into allegations that former Tamaulipas Gov. Tomas Yarrington took bribes from cartels.
The official spoke Friday on condition of anonymity because he not allowed to discuss an investigation in progress.
Two weeks ago, U.S. federal prosecutors filed two civil forfeiture cases seeking to seize more than $7 million in properties that Yarrington or his associates allegedly bought in Texas.
Yarrington has not been charged with any crime. His lawyer denies any wrongdoing.
