Nearly 20,000 Costa Ricans have crowded into the capital's national stadium as Catholics around Latin America and the Caribbean celebrate the canonization of the late popes John Paul II and John XXIII with prayers and joyous singing and dancing.
The celebrations have been especially fervent in Costa Rica, where the church says Floribeth Mora experienced a miracle recovery attributed to John Paul II. She had suffered from an inoperable brain aneurysm
Catholics on Saturday evening filled the bleachers at Costa Rica's main stadium for an overnight vigil. They watched the Vatican ceremony broadcast early Sunday on giant screens.
Many faithful carried photographs of John Paul II, who is especially popular in the region. Vendors outside the stadium hawked tiny figurines of the late pontiff who visited Costa Rica in 1983.
