A landslide at a strip coal mine's dump has killed one person and left five others missing and presumed dead in northern Vietnam.

Thai Nguyen province Vice Governor Dang Viet Thuan says several hundred soldiers, policemen and workers have been mobilized to search for the missing following Sunday's incident.

He said Monday that the missing includes three members of a family. He said an elderly man was also injured in the slide.

The Tuoi Tre newspaper said seven people managed to escape unharmed.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the landslide.
