Jordan's police spokesman says 61 Syrians have been arrested for entering the kingdom illegally.
Col. Mohammed Khatib says the 61 were caught on Tuesday hiding inside three vehicles the police intercepted on a highway near the town of Maan in southern Jordan.
The area is used mostly as a transit route for neighboring Saudi Arabia and the Gulf of Aqaba on the Red Sea.
Khatib says the Syrians and their drivers are being questioned. He declined to provide other details, except to say he believes the Syrians are illegal migrants.
Jordan hosts more than 210,000 Syrian refugees who have fled the civil war in their country.
