Officials in Ivory Coast say the military has detained a militia leader accused of grave crimes during the country's 2010-11 postelection violence whose forces had been illegally occupying a national park.
Amade Oueremi, a native of Burkina Faso, fought alongside forces backing President Alassane Ouattara in the conflict. He had become a symbol of alleged impunity for Ouattara's military backers.
Denis Badouon, vice mayor in the western town of Duekoue, said Oueremi was taken into custody Saturday morning. A military commander, who insisted on anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the operation, said Oueremi turned himself in.
It was not immediately clear whether Oueremi had been charged with a crime. Human Rights Watch has identified him as a main perpetrator of a notorious March 2011 massacre in Duekoue.
