Indian protesters demand that minor convicted in fatal gang rape be held after serving term

Published December 20, 2015

Hundreds of protesters have taken to the streets of India's capital to protest the impending release of a juvenile convicted in the fatal 2012 gang rape that shook this deeply misogynistic country.

The man, who was short of his 18th birthday at the time of the crime, finishes his three-year term in a reform home on Sunday.

Several activists and politicians have demanded that he not be released until it can be proven that he has been reformed.

On Friday, the Delhi High Court rejected a petition to extend his term, saying that the man has served the maximum sentence under the law. India's top court is set to hear another such petition Monday.

The man was one of six who attacked a woman aboard a moving bus.
