Hungarian Jewish federation threatens boycott of government's Holocaust commemorations

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

The Federation of Hungarian Jewish Communities says it will boycott all government events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Holocaust in Hungary unless the government backs down on controversial plans for two World War II-related memorials.

The dispute stems from historical and ideological differences between the federation and Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government about the yearlong series of remembrances centered on the 1944 deportation of over 430,000 Hungarian Jews to Nazi death camps.

The federation said Sunday it wants the government to abandon plans to build a memorial of Nazi Germany's 1944 invasion of Hungary because it deflects Hungary's role in the Holocaust and to halt a project dedicated to the child victims of the Holocaust because of uncertainty over its "historical approach."

Orban is expected address concerns next week.
