    Hispanic Heritage Month Kicks Off By Honoring the Best

    Hispanic Heritage Awards will celebrate cultural pride, accomplishment and promise.

    Vision Award Juanes has sold more than 13 million albums and has also won 17 Latin Grammy awards - the most by anyone in history. The Colombian singer is also known for his humanitarian work and activism. Twice the legendary singer has held free concerts with the objective of pushing for peace and freedom. In 2008, 300,000 people gathered on the Colombia/Venezuela Border and in 2009 Juanes put together his second "Peace Without Borders" concert in Havana's storied Plaza de la Revolución. Named one of the 100 most influential people by Time magazine in 2005, you can read more about his humanitarian contributions particularly his work with children. The Juanes' foundation, "Fundación Mi Sangre," seeks to eschew a likely life of despair and an education in war for the country's children – in exchange for a foundation on peace building and hope.

    Legend Award Does anything else need to be said about the legendary Chespirito? Mexican actor Roberto Gómez Bolaños, known as Chespirito, is best known for his role in the popular shows El Chapulín Colorado translated literally as "The Red Grasshopper"and El Chavo del Ocho translated as "The Boy From Number 8." Chespirito played these beloved characters which both gained international fame and are still referenced and seen till this day. At one point, it was estimated that 50 to 60 percent of Mexico would turn on their televisions to watch his shows which he acted in for 25 years. Both shows ended in the 90's but to this day reruns play all over Latin America and the world.

    Sports Award Widely regarded as the best Mexican Footballer to ever play, Hugo Sánchez known as "Pentapichichi" was a Mexican football coach and former striker that played for four European clubs including Real Madrid. Sánchez is known as the first Mexican superstar type player who participated in three world cups and played for the Mexican national team.

    Leadership Award Andrade is the President of the Hispanic Leadership Institute. Dr. Juan Andrade is a born leader and one of the most influential Latino in the world.  In 2011 he received the Ohtli Award, the highest honor presented by the people and government of Mexico for service to the community in the United States.  Andrade, was previously decorated at the White House by then President of Bill Clinton “for the performance of exemplary deeds of service for the nation” and “excellence in promoting leadership and civic participation.”  He is now one of only three Hispanics in history to be honored by both the government of Mexico and the government of the United States. The other two were the late Cesar Chávez and the late Mario Obledo. As current President of the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute, the Institute has trained over 250,000 present & future leaders and published 475 studies on Latino demographics since 1982.     Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Education Award  A champion of Education. Elizabeth “Betty” Molina Morgan, Ph.D., has spent more than 30 years working in all facets (inner-city, rural and suburban) of public education. She was the superintendent of Washington County (Maryland) Schools for nearly a decade and led the high-poverty district to increase its graduation rate from 78 percent to 92 percent.  Dr. Morgan improved the dropout rate from one of the highest of any district in the state to one of the lowest. She has served as a teacher, principal and senior administrator in other school systems.

    Business Award Jorge Vergara is considered one of the best and most successful Mexican entrepreneurs to date. Vergara is the owner of 4 soccer clubs: Club Guadalajara also known as “Chivas”( the biggest soccer team in Mexico), Saprisa ( the biggest soccer team in Costa Rica), Chivas USA, and Chivas China. Vergara once sold tacos on the streets of Mexico before he began working for the nutrition and weight management company Herbalife. In fact, Vergara was the man who was instrumental in bringing the company to Mexico. He is also the owner of Omnilife which is also a nutritional supplement company. Vergara In 2002, Variety named him one of its Ten Producers to Watch.

    Arts Award Rubén Blades is Panama.  The legendary Panamanian salsa artist, lawyer, actor, musician and politician is most famous for his music especially Patria (meaning Fatherland) and Pedro Navaja. Patria is considered by many to be the second national anthem of Panama. Blades, who prefers the English pronunciation of his last name, even ran for President in Panama and managed to get 18 percent of the vote in a failed bid in 1994. Blades was the Minister of Tourism for Panama for five years and graduated from Harvard with a master's degree in International Law.
