A miner in Guyana fatally shot four people, including two police officers, before killing himself in a shooting rampage in the South American country's capital.

Police say gold miner Dereyck Khanai barricaded himself in his Georgetown home Tuesday and began randomly firing bullets into the street.

Police say the 51-year-old man killed two people who were standing near his home, then killed two police officers during a more than two-hour standoff. Authorities say Khanai ended the standoff by fatally shooting himself.

People hid inside businesses as dozens of shots were exchanged between Khanai and police on Middle Street, one of Georgetown's main commercial centers.

The motive for the shooting rampage is unclear.
