Iraqi police officials say assailants have gunned down a bodyguard for the country's Shiite vice president in a drive-by-shooting in downtown Baghdad.
The officials say the attack Saturday afternoon in the Karradah neighborhood killed the off-duty bodyguard for Vice President Khudier al-Khuzaie.
A medic at the nearby Ibn al-Nafis hospital confirmed the bodyguard's death.
All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to release information to the media.
Violence has ebbed in Iraq, but Sunni insurgents frequently target security and government officials in an attempt to shake the people's confidence in the Shiite-led government.
