THESSALONIKI, Greece – A bus driver who prevented two Africans from boarding his vehicle in Greece's second largest city has been convicted of racism, fined 1,000 euros ($1,400) and given a suspended prison sentence.
A court in the northern city of Thessaloniki on Monday found the driver guilty of being motivated by racist reasons.
A passenger on the bus filed the complaint, claiming the driver prevented the two African men from getting on at a stop in April 2013. She also said the driver boasted that he supports Greece's Nazi-inspired Golden Dawn party.
The driver — who has not been suspended — claimed the men became abusive after he asked whether they would buy tickets. He said politics didn't affect his job.
The court gave him a 10-month sentence, suspended for three years.
