The governor of a major Chinese province has been removed from his post over accusations of disloyalty to the ruling Communist Party.
Sichuan Governor Wei Hong's removal comes amid a climate of growing political intolerance under President and party chief Xi Jinping. Xi is seen as nurturing a nascent personality cult similar to that of the founder of the communist state, Mao Zedong.
The party's watchdog body said on its website Friday that Wei had been demoted to a vice departmental post and removed from his party duties. He was accused of being disloyal and dishonest, but no other details were given.
Xi has overseen a sweeping crackdown on dissent and civil society groups, along with corrupt officials. Unusually, however, the accusations against Wei made no mention of graft.
