The last chapter in George Zimmerman’s saga comes with a price tag, and a hefty one at that. The acquitted killer of African-American teenager Trayvon Martin has taken in art and is selling his work on eBay. The online auction started Monday at $0.99 and by Tuesday at noon had had already 98 bids and raised the price to $99, 966.
It is a 18" x 24" hand-painted canvas in tones of blue that shows the American flag with select phrases from the Pledge of Allegiance that altogether read “One nation with liberty and justice for all.”
In the item description box, Zimmerman wrote: “My art work allows me to reflect, providing a therapeutic outlet and allows me to remain indoors :-) I hope you enjoy owning this piece as much as I enjoyed creating it. Your friend, George Zimmerman.”
Zimmerman, 30, was acquitted of murder in July in the shooting of 17-year-old Martin during a confrontation in the gated community where Zimmerman was a neighborhood watch volunteer. The shooting sparked accusations that Zimmerman had racially profiled Martin, who was black and unarmed, and led to nationwide debates over self-defense laws.
Bids in the site are anonymous, but eBay requires the seller to “to review the accuracy of your personal information, confirm your phone number, and select an automatic payment method for paying selling fees and eBay Buyer Protection reimbursements.”
One of the bidders in the auction, set to end on Friday, took to the Q&A section of the page to tell the former neighborhood watch: “We all love you and stand behind you. You have so many people on your side I hope you know that!"
After thanking the support, Zimmerman writes: “I do know how many great Americans are still here, I run into at least 3-5 a day that go out of their way to tell me the same.”
