PARIS -- A 22-year-old Frenchman who falsely claimed to have kidnapped two police officers was jailed for two weeks, the Le Parisien newspaper reported Friday.

The hoax kidnapper called police in Melun, in the Paris suburbs, late Tuesday, saying that he was holding two people hostage and demanding to be put through to the local police chief, the report said.

"They are police. I am with accomplices, and I want $1.4 million," he told the police chief. "The people with me are ready to kill the hostages. One false move and I'll do it. I'll call you at 9:00am [local time] sharp."

Police immediately began to investigate the case and tracked down the source of the call. The three "accomplices" -- all teenage girls -- were identified, and they told police the details of the hoax.

After initially denying involvement, the 22 year old confessed and said they were just goofing around. He was jailed for two weeks and fined €1,500.
