A French appeals court upheld the dismissal of a Muslim day care worker for wearing a headscarf at a nursery that demands strict neutrality from employees, Reuters reported.
According to the report, the decision was announced at the same time as French lawyers defended the country's ban on full-face veils in public before the European Court of Human Rights.
"Today a republican institution has reaffirmed the strength of the principle of secularism," Richard Malka, the lawyer for the Baby Loup day care center, said.
The Collective against Islamophobia in France (CCIF) called the ruling "a veritable judicial scandal" that means "nobody is protected against being judged by one's religious, ethnic or social origin," Reuters reported.
Fatima Afif was fired in 2008 after she started to wear a headscarf to work despite a dress code banning religious wear.
