The Denmark-based son of a former finance minister in the Comoros islands says his father is being held in custody for calling for a general strike in protest at the government's energy plans.
Jacob Mchangama says his father, Mohamed Said Abdallah Mchangama, was arrested Sunday on charges of inciting hatred.
The son, who lives in Denmark, told the AP on Tuesday that his father's girlfriend visited him in prison on Monday.
Mchangama senior, who heads a consumer organization critical of the government had criticized its energy plans and described them as "ridiculous." Last week, the African Development Bank announced support for government plans for the ailing energy sector.
Mchangama was a political refugee in Denmark before returning home in 1989. He was finance minister on the islands in the 1990s.
