Father-in-law of Peru candidate evaded US taxes

LIMA, Peru – The U.S. man married to Peruvian presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori has acknowledged that his father pleaded guilty to U.S. tax evasion charges 11 years ago and received three years probation.

Mark Villanella says reports about the case are part of "a dirty war" against his wife.

The candidate's father, Alberto Fujimori, is serving a 25-year prison term for authorizing death squad killings and corruption as Peru's president from 1990-2000.

Villanella told reporters Tuesday that he was 15 when his father committed an "administrative oversight" by not paying an estimated $11,000 in taxes.

Federal court records in New Jersey show that Joseph Villanella Jr. pleaded guilty to felony tax evasion charges in 2000 and paid a $5,000 fine.
