Belgian newspapers are reporting that the former Belgian national police chief has been suspended from his new job after being indicted for attempted rape.

The papers say 56-year-old Fernand Koekelberg was indicted Thursday. His successor as commissioner-general of the federal police, Paul van Thielen, said in a statement Friday the suspension reflected no judgment on Koekelberg's guilt or innocence.

Koekelberg resigned as commissioner-general in March following a lobbying scandal. He was given a job as liaison between different police forces.

Belgian media say Koekelberg's accuser reportedly tried to end their relationship last Sunday, but alleged he then tried to rape her. Koekelberg's lawyer said his client has filed charges of slander against his accuser.
