A European diplomat says the European Union has partially lifted a ban on Philippine airlines after Filipino authorities addressed aviation safety concerns.
The decision takes effect Friday. EU Ambassador to Manila Guy Ledoux said Wednesday that the EU will allow flag carrier Philippine Airlines to resume flights to Europe, bolstering efforts to boost tourism and trade.
The European Commission banned all Philippine carriers from entering its airspace in March 2010 due to noncompliance with international safety standards.
Philippine officials welcomed the EU decision Wednesday. They say they expect the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration to lift safety restrictions on Philippine carriers this year.
