European Union lawmakers are demanding that Egypt give Italy documents and information so a fair investigation can be held into the death of an Italian graduate student who is believed to have been tortured.
In a resolution Thursday, lawmakers condemned the killing of Giulio Regeni, whose body was found with signs of torture in January more than a week after he went missing in Cairo.
They asked Egypt "to provide the Italian authorities with all the documents and information necessary to enable a swift, transparent and impartial joint investigation."
The lawmakers said the case is not an isolated incident, and comes in "a context of torture, death in custody and enforced disappearances across Egypt in recent years."
The resolution was passed by 588 votes to 10 against, with 59 abstentions.
