EU calls meeting of bloc's 28 foreign ministers on Ukraine violence, weighing sanctions

BRUSSELS – The European Union is calling an extraordinary meeting of foreign ministers to decide the 28-nation bloc's reaction including possible sanctions to the recent escalation of violence in Ukraine.

European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said Wednesday he expects the EU to adopt "targeted measures against those responsible for violence and use of excessive force."

Such sanctions could include travel bans targeting the Ukrainian leadership and asset freezes.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton's office said the special meeting of foreign ministers will gather to weigh the bloc's options Thursday in Brussels.

Ukrainian authorities say 25 people have died and over 240 were injured during clashes between police and anti-government protesters in the Ukrainian capital Kiev since Tuesday.
