Egyptian judicial officials say a police officer in a Nile Delta province has been convicted of torture, and nine officers from a southern province have been referred to trial for the same charge.
It was the latest apparent effort by authorities to curb the tide of police abuses in Egypt.
Judge Bahgat Dawood said Friday he sentenced the officer to five years in prison for beating a detained man to death in Beheira in May. In Luxor, where the death last month of a man in police custody sparked riots, prosecutor Ahmed Abdel-Rahman said he referred nine policemen to trial for torture on Thursday.
President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi has vowed to punish abusive officers following the recent deaths of several detainees.
