The Dominican Republic has a new, expansive botanical park to honor three strong-willed sisters who were slain for opposing a former dictator.
The Ecopark of Peace opened Thursday to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Mirabal sisters' deaths.
Sitting just north of the capital, the park is in the town of Ojo de Agua, where the sisters were born and buried.
The women were beaten and suffocated on Nov. 25, 1960, on a remote mountain road by former dictator Rafael Trujillo's secret police for opposing his regime.
Their story has been made into a couple of films based on Julia Alvarez's book, "In the Time of the Butterflies."
