Cyprus' foreign minister says his country will not consent to letting Turkey restart stalled negotiations to enter the European Union because Turkey has not done enough to help ongoing talks to reunify the ethnically-split country.
Ioannis Kasoulides told Greece's state broadcaster ERT Monday that Cyprus will keep blocking talks between Turkey and the EU on policy areas, or chapters, that deal with justice and security, as well as judiciary and fundamental rights.
But Cyprus' permanent representative to the EU, Kornelios Korneliou said Monday that the Cypriot government could consent to start talking with Turkey on its economy and monetary policy chapter.
All EU members must consent to EU entry talks with candidate countries. Cyprus has blocked six EU-Turkey negotiation chapters since 2009.
