An official says Congo wants the recently arrested fugitive leader of a Ugandan rebel group extradited to Congo.
Justice and Human Rights Minister Alexis Thambwe Mwamba said Sunday that Allied Democratic Forces leader Jamil Mukulu committed more killings in Congo than in Uganda.
Ugandan officials said Mukulu, who had been on the run since the 1990s as leader of the Islamic extremist group that operated in eastern Congo, was arrested in Tanzania last week and is in the custody of Tanzanian security officials.
The ADF is one of many armed groups operating in eastern Congo, and Mukulu had been the subject of an Interpol arrest warrant.
The rebels have been largely quiet over the years, staging sporadic attacks on towns in eastern Congo and against Congolese military units.
