Talks on ending Colombia's protracted civil conflict have resumed with a surprising proposal from the country's largest rebel group: postpone next year's elections.
Ivan Marquez is the nom de guerre of a top commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.
He's calling for a national debate on delaying the May 2014 vote, in which President Juan Manuel Santos has hinted he will seek a second term.
Marquez proposed Tuesday that elections for political offices from the mayoral to the presidential level be postponed for a year so that campaigning doesn't jeopardize the peace process.
Talks between the FARC and government delegates have been taking place for the last six months in the Cuban capital.
