Chinese state media say that a new policy will mandate all military personnel to meet weight requirements and link promotions with fitness.
The PLA Daily, the official newspaper for the ruling Communist Party's military commission that oversees the country's armed forces, said Friday that the commission's four highest departments issued the joint policy that outlines reforms in military fitness training, which aim to build a stronger force.
Member of the Chinese public have long complained that their generals are out of shape, joking they are better at banquet drinking than battlefield commanding.
China's anti-corruption officials have said bribing for promotions in the military is common and are seeking to stop it.
Obesity also has become a public concern in China, where economic development has significantly improved living conditions.
