The children of former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori have filed a formal appeal asking the government to release him early from prison because he is suffering deteriorating health and tongue cancer.
The 74-year-old Fujimori is serving a 25-year sentence for human rights violations committed during his authoritarian presidency from 1990 to 2000.
His four children submitted their request Wednesday to Peru's Justice Department, then presented a letter to President Ollanta Humala asking him to grant clemency on humanitarian grounds. A government spokesman says the appeal will be follow the usual process.
Fujimori has had two surgeries for tongue cancer -- once in 1997 and then in the year after he was jailed in 2007. He has since undergone three operations to remove precancerous lesions on his tongue.
