A court has ordered a woman who calls herself the mother of a pet monkey found wandering outside an Ikea store in Toronto to pay more than $75,000 to a primate sanctuary she sued.
The monkey, named Darwin, became famous in 2012 when he was spotted walking around the parking lot wearing a tiny shearling coat.
The monkey's owner, Yasmin Nakhuda, lost ownership of Darwin after he escaped from her car.
Animal services sent him to Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary in Ontario, which Nakhuda sued in an attempt to get Darwin back.
An Ontario judge ruled in September that the monkey is a wild animal that must stay at the sanctuary.
The court ruled Friday that Nakhuda must pay the sanctuary US$75,000 in addition to her legal costs.
