Canada's transportation safety board says the government needs to implement tougher new standards for oil trains earlier than a 2025 target.
The government proposed tougher standards for tank cars this month in response to a string of fiery crashes. The new proposal would require the cars to have a layer of thermal protection and thicker steel walls.
But in a report about a March 7 derailment near Gogama, Ontario, the Transportation Safety Board says the proposal to phase the standards in by 2025 isn't soon enough.
A new standard was enacted in Canada after a fiery derailment in July, 2013 in the center of Lac-Megantic, Quebec, killed 47 people, but oil trains meeting the new standard continue to derail and catch fire throughout North America.
