Burundi's electoral commission is proposing the delayed presidential elections originally scheduled for late June be held on July 15.
Prosper Ntahorwamiye, a spokesman for Burundi's electoral commission, told The Associated Press Monday that a new electoral schedule had been sent to President Pierre Nkurunziza for his approval.
The commission set June 26 as a possible new date for choosing members of the national assembly, he said, adding that they are now waiting for Nkurunziza to issue a decree either confirming those dates or possibly setting new ones.
Burundi has been hit by political unrest since the announcement on April 25 that Nkurunziza would seek a third term in office, which many see as unconstitutional.
The capital, Bujumbura, has seen almost daily street protests by those calling for the president's exit.
