An attempted coup in Burundi appears to have failed after the office of President Pierre Nkurunziza announced he was back in the country.
The streets of the capital, Bujumbura, were mostly quiet Friday morning following fighting Thursday between loyalist troops and forces supporting a major general who announced the coup bid on Wednesday. along a highway in the south of the country, there were many police checkpoints but otherwise life was going on as normal.
Still, the U.S. urged its citizens to leave Burundi the country. The U.S. Embassy in Burundi said it will be closed Friday amid the insecurity.
Burundi's presidency announced late Thursday that Nkurunziza had returned to Burundi but he has yet to appear in public. It also said he saluted the police for their patriotism.
